A PARADE was held on Sunday to commemorate Widnes war heroes who fell during the battles of Messines, Passchendaele and Cambrai 100 years ago.

Veterans from the Royal British Legion Ball O Ditton and Royal Artillery Association joined sea, army and air cadets, Girl Guides and pupils for a service in Victoria Park.

Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire David Briggs joined Halton MP Derek Twigg and Halton Mayor and Mayoress Cllrs Alan and Joan Lowe, Halton Council leader Cllr Rob Polhill and local councillors.

The service was led by lay preacher Clare Liptrott and Fr Matt Jolley.

The names of 104 men who lost their lives were read out by schoolchildren.

A memorial stone was unveiled to commemorate five new names of men lost in the Great War.

Wreathes were laid by dignitaries, veterans and cadets.

A medley of songs were led by the Irish Guards and Knights Choir.
