A PASSION for flowers inspired a small group of ladies to get together in Hough Green in 1967.

Now 50 years later Widnes Floral Art Group, which gives people the chance to share their love of flowers, fun and friendship, is celebrating its golden jubilee.

Special events are being held throughout the year to mark the historic milestone.

Members enjoyed a three course candlelit dinner including spring lamb and salmon served by budding young chefs at Riverside College.

A celebration cake was cut by founder member Vera Ankers after a toast was raised to thank everyone who has helped to create, support and shape the club.

A visit to Holker Hall and Gardens in Cumbria on Saturday included a guided tour of the stately home and time to explore 25 acres of woodland and gardens.

A garden party and a trip to a festive flower and food show in Blackpool are just some of the many other special outings planned.

The club has more than 60 members and welcomes visitors every month as professional demonstrators create fresh flower arrangements to depict a theme.

Diane Fair presents Summer Delights at 7.30pm on Wednesday, July 5 at Farnworth Methodist Church hall on Derby Road.

National demonstrator Tom Hodge will be on stage on December 6 with The Magic of Christmas.
