A COMMUNITY dig is set to unearth more buried secrets hidden beneath Halton Castle.

The Centre of Applied Archaeology at the University of Salford has been commissioned by Norton Priory to supervise a second season of excavations.

Volunteers are needed for two weeks from July 17.

More than 300 adults and children helped to uncover fascinating finds in 2015.

Two human skeletons, believed to be a man and woman, were found in the outer bailey and have been radiocarbon dated to the late Middle Ages.

Their presence within the castle walls is a mystery and Norton Priory is keen to find out more contextual information to help solve this ancient enigma.

The foundations of a significant building were also discovered and archaeologists want to explore what that may have been.

Senior keeper Lynn Smith said: “This is another fantastic opportunity to further investigate Halton Castle and to help discover more about the skeletons that were found in 2015.”

Further details will be given at the Cheshyre Library opposite the St Mary’s Church hall on Castle Road at 6.30pm on Wednesday.

Anyone interested in taking part in the dig should call Claire Broadhurst at Norton Priory on 01928 569895 or e-mail clairebroadhurst@nortonpriory.org.

The excavations have been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Norton Priory is grateful to National Lottery players for making it possible.
