A WIDNES supermarket is reopening following a £615,000 makeover.

The Co-op in Ditton is celebrating with a weekend of family fun for the community.

The new-look store on Liverpool Road brings a funding boost to community groups through its Mmembership scheme.

Members receive a five per cent reward on the purchase of own-branded products and services, with a further 1 per cent benefitting local good causes.

The National Childbirth Trust in Widnes and Runcorn are already set to benefit.

The store is creating three new jobs and will increase its opening hours to 6am-11pm Cartoon characters Olaf and a Minion will help to launch the store and a family fun weekend – including a bouncy castle – will raise funds and awareness for the Cathie Stankevitch Foundation.

A Co-op pop-up shop has continued to serve the community with more than 100 lines of everyday essentials while the makeover has been completed.

The new-look store will include new flooring, fixtures and refrigeration along with an enhanced in-store bakery, Costa coffee, and a focus on fresh, healthy foods, meal ideas and essentials.

Michael Sedgwick, store manager for the Ditton Co-op, said: “We are looking forward to welcoming the community into the new-look Ditton store.

“We are thrilled to have made such a significant investment in the area, it is an exciting time for the whole team.

“We are also giving back to the community. Our members can make a difference locally simply by swiping their membership card when they shop with us, raising much needed funding for organisations in the area who contribute to improving local life.”

There will be offers and promotions in and around the new-look store to mark its launch.

Students in Widnes holding an NUS extra card will receive a 10 per cent discount off their groceries in Co-op food stores.

The fun day activity runs from 10am to 6pm on Friday and from noon until 6pm on Saturday and Sunday.
