RUNCORN pupils have won a prize after joining more than 1,500 schoolchildren across Halton for a lifesaving road safety event.
Pupils at St Mary’s CE Primary School in Castlefields were commended for participation and behaviour at Crucial Crew, a unique project.
Children from 46 primary schools took part in fun-filled safety sessions organised by Halton Council at the Select Security Stadium.
The year five pupils from St Mary’s were presented with the Crucial Crew shield and a rugby ball signed by the Widnes Vikings, plus two sports sessions from Halton Council’s sports development team.
Michelle Simpson, Halton Council road safety officer, said: "This is a fantastic achievement - to come first out of 48 schools.
"The children’s behaviour was exemplary and they stood out from the 1,500 pupils that attended the event. "
The annual event provided eight scenarios presented by partners from Cheshire Fire, Cheshire Police, Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Trust, Children’s Safeguarding Board, Scottish Power and Health Improvement Team.
Youngsters learnt how to put casualties in the recovery position and how to tackle cyber crime and dangers posed by fires in the bedroom.
They were given tips on what to do to prevent electrical accidents at home.
Home safety and first aid were delivered in a fun way after the children carried out exercises around the i-Pitch.
