A RUNCORN war veteran has died at the age of 99.
Charles Beech was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal while serving in the Royal Navy.
His citation commended his ‘courage, skills and zeal while serving on HMS Pathfinder in an action on April 25 1943 in which an enemy submarine was destroyed’.
Mr Beech, formerly from Preston Brook, worked as an Anti Submarine Detection Investigation Committee (ASDIC) operator during the Second World War.
The seaman was also aboard destroyer HMS Maori, which was involved with the sinking of German battleship Bismarck picking up survivors.
Mr Beech died at Beechcroft Care Home on Lapwing Grove, Palacefields, on May 17.
Family and friends say he will be sadly missed.
