ALMOST 1,200 families in crisis received food handouts in Widnes during the past 12 months, a rise of 226 on the previous year.

The town’s foodbank distributed 1,137 three day emergency food supplies.

More than 800 were given to children in need.

Clare Bedford, project co-ordinator of Widnes Foodbank said: “It is deeply concerning that we are still seeing an increase in the number of three day emergency food supplies provided to people in crisis in Widnes over the last year.

“Anybody could find themselves in need of the foodbank.

“Every week people are referred to us after being hit by something unavoidable – such as illness, a delay in a benefit payment or an unexpected bill – means food is simply unaffordable.”

The top three reasons people gave for turning to the foodbank are benefit delay, benefit change and low income 15%.

During the past year 22,260 kilos of food have been donated and more than 150 people currently volunteer.

Schools, businesses and faith groups have provided vital support.

“It really is only with the community’s support that we’re able to provide vital emergency help when it matters most,”added Clare.

“We hope that one day there will be no need for us in Widnes. But until that day comes, we will continue to offer the best possible service to help people facing a crisis.

“Thank you so much to everyone in Widnes who already donates time, food and money.”

Widnes Foodbank also provides essentials including washing powder, nappies and sanitary products to families who are struggling as well as signposting them to other services.
