FIREFIGHTERS are still at the scene of a ‘major’ incident involving plastic and cardboard on Tan House Lane.

Fifteen fire engines and an aerial appliance were called to a blazing warehouse at Saffil Limited shortly before 7pm last night.

A huge plume of black smoke could be seen for miles.

Residents living nearby are still being advised to keep doors and windows closed.

Most of the roads have now been opened again although Moss Bank Lane remains shut.

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Special booms have been laid to stop water sprayed onto the fire from entering the River Mersey.

“This is to ensure that every effort is made to protect the environment.”

The number of fire engines was reduced to 10 at midnight but crews remained at the scene throughout the night.

“Although the smoke has reduced people are still urged to keep their windows and doors shut,” added the fire spokesman.

Public Health England said: “It’s important that residents understand that the risks to their health are low.

“However, because any smoke is an irritant, it can make people’s eyes and throat sore.

“People with asthma and other respiratory conditions may be particularly susceptible to the smoke and should carry and use their medication as usual.

“If you have any concerns about the smoke’s impact on your health please call your GP surgery for advice.”

Crews are currently liaising with the Environment Agency on site.

Fire engines from Runcorn, Widnes and Warrington are still at the incident along with the incident command unit from Northwich.

Firefighters are still at the incident and will be there for the rest of the day.

Crews are going through the debris and damping down any hot spots to extinguish the fire.
