A DEDICATED blood donor has been honoured after reaching his 100th donation.
Retired housing property manager Derek Lee, from Runcorn, was recognised by NHS Blood and Transplant for his loyalty and commitment.
The 65-year-old received an award and certificate for potentially saving the lives of up to 300 patients.
Derek, of Sandown Close, started donating his rare AB Positive blood in 1976.
He said: “It is very rewarding. You can track your donation. It is wonderful to see where it is used. I would encourage anyone who can to give blood as it helps to save lives.”
At the award ceremony, Derek met Nicci Adkins, whose daughter Daisy is only alive today, thanks to 84 blood transfusions.
The five-year-old suffered with a condition called diamond blackfan anaemia which meant that her body didn’t produce any red blood cells.
Daisy received blood every 4 weeks to keep her alive.
After a bone marrow transplant from her sister Pixie she now enjoys life free from blood transfusions.
Nicci said: “We feel very lucky that Daisy has been given a new lease of life and want to thank all blood donors who give up their time to make such a big difference. ”
