THREE teenagers were caught trying to climb the new Runcorn Widnes bridge in the early hours of the morning.

The police picked them up at 3am on Sunday and said their parents were not even aware their children had sneaked out.

Cheshire Police warned people of the dangers of scaling the structure.

Police officers posted on social media: “To anyone else thinking of this, don’t.It is extremely dangerous and you could be prosecuted and fined for trespassing.

“On this occasion, no one was hurt and their were parents informed. “They were not aware their children had sneaked out!”

A spokesperson for the Mersey Gateway Project said: “The three individuals were spotted walking onto the trestle bridge at 2am by a member of our 24-hour security team who alerted the police immediately.

“We’d like to thank Cheshire Police for their swift response in the middle of the night.

“This is very much a live construction site with the added danger of being over water.

“We have extensive security in place to stop people from accessing the site because it is such a dangerous place to be if you don’t have the proper training and personal protective equipment.”
