A WIDNES teenager fulfilling her ambition to study in America came home to talk about her amazing journey.

Emma Humphries fought stiff competition from 3,700 applicants to take part in the Sutton Trust’s USA programme.

The 19-year-old is now in her first year studying liberal arts at Smith College and is loving life in the USA.

The former Cronton A Level student came home to talk to students on the college’s Prestigious Universities Programme about her experience.

Emma, of Gloucester Road, Farnworth, said, “Studying in the USA has been an amazing experience, the classes are really interesting and challenging.

“The flexible open curriculum style of learning allows me to study new and different things.

“I’m even taking a neuroscience class next semester! There are lots of opportunities to take advantage of.

“I have made lots of new friends and the social life is amazing. I’m the only Brit in my class but it has been a big positive.

“My American friends love having a British friend!”

Emma is keen to encourage other students to study abroad and will be returning to talk at a Gifted and Talented Day for them.

“Studying abroad is the best decision I have ever made,” added Emma. “It’s really hard work but worth it.

“Through the Sutton programme my dreams of studying abroad became a reality.

“I discovered the different paths available and learned of funding possibilities to make it possible.

“Studying at Cronton made me more ambitious and adventurous.

“I finished feeling prepared for life through things like moving away from home.

“There are so many options when leaving college, I would say do what fits you, not what you think you have to do.”

Luke MacMahon, head of the Prestigious Universities Programme, said: “We are very proud of the success Emma has achieved in earning a place at Smith College.

“She has been a fantastic role model for our current students and is always eager to help when she can.

“The student feedback about Emma’s talk has been tremendous and we are excited to work with her on our future activities.”
