A WOMAN was assaulted in Widnes on New Year’s Eve.

The victim suffered injuries to her forehead, arms and knees as a result of the incident on Wavertree Road.

Police believe a taxi driver may hold vital clues and are appealing for the cabbie to come forward.

It is believed that the taxi driver picked up a man from the taxi rank outside the Imperial pub on Albert Road, at approximately 11pm on Saturday, January 31.

The taxi then drove to the side of the Derby pub on Farrant Street where she collected a second passenger, a woman.

After collecting both passengers the taxi driver then dropped them off at an address in the Wavertree Road area of Widnes.

The taxi has been described as a dark coloured, hatchback style vehicle which had a yellow taxi sign on its roof.

Detective Constable Jordan Trentini said: “We are currently carrying out a number of enquiries in relation to this incident and we are keen to trace the taxi driver as believe that she may hold vital information regarding this investigation.

“I would urge the taxi driver to contact the team here at Widnes to enable us to progress with our investigation.”

A 52-year-old man has been arrested in connection to the incident. He has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
