A PILOT who gave his life and service to his country and fellow men was born on Vine Street in Widnes in 1892.

A blue plaque to mark the courage of Victoria Cross hero Thomas Mottershead will be unveiled outside his home on his birthday at 10.30am on January 17.

Runcorn coach firm Anthony’s Travel has sponsored the historic commemoration.

Partner Richard Bamber said: “We’re only a small family company but we’re passionate about our community.

“Halton has given a lot to us so we like to give something back.”

Anthony’s Travel was the first corporate sponsor of Runcorn Victoria Cross hero Todger Jones’ statue appeal.

“He was mum’s great uncle so I think it is important that we honour these brave men.”

Relatives and members of the Thomas Mottershead statue appeal committee will attend the unveiling.

This year marks the centenary of Thomas’ widow Peggy receiving his posthumous Victoria Cross from King George V.

After much discussion, it has been decided that his statue will be unveiled on April 1, 2018, the centenary of the day when the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air service combined for form the Royal Air Force.
