STUDENTS leaving The Grange School celebrated their achievements at an Oscar-style ceremony.

Team GB sprinter Kelly Massey, who won a bronze medal at the Rio Olympics, congratulated year 11 pupils on their successful GCSE results.

The 31-year-old track star was the inspirational guest speaker at an awards evening which included musical performances by learners Olivia Carmon and Erin Macdonald.

The athlete, who won bronze in the 2014 Commonwealth Games, told a packed audience about her own struggle against injury to make it into the Olympic squad.

“Don’t be the one to not take that chance on your dreams,” she said.

“Always try your best to get where you want to be and really go for it. “Don’t be the one who is sat at home and regretting the things they haven’t done.”

Head teacher Janette Vincent said: “More than 99 per cent of learners have achieved a qualification this year which is fantastic.

“Many of our learners have also achieved A*s and A grades.

“People may think you have achieved these grades because you are naturally talented and intelligent but it is due to the incredible amount of hard work you have put in and the support you have received from your teachers, parents and guardians.

“You have been a wonderful year group and real credit to our school.”

Special accolades were presented for individual excellence.

Rhys Johnson who gained 14 GCSEs from A* to B won the progress leader award.

The head teacher’s award was presented to Hannah Ward.

Rhys, who is now studying for his A Levels, said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time at The Grange.

“Teachers have been so supportive and have helped me to get the results I wanted.”

Budding entrepreneur Hannah added: “I hope to start my own business after I finish college and The Grange has given me the skills and confidence I need to go forward.”
