A TEAM of women cyclists dressed up as Mrs Claus to bring some Christmas cheer to sick children.

In festive red costumes, Runcorn Belles Cycling Club rode from Runcorn Town Hall to Warrington Hospital to deliver sacks of Christmas presents.

Sandymoor mum-of-three Natalie Grice, who runs the club, said: “God knows what people who were driving past thought of us.

“But we have all got children and some of us have grandchildren too so we wanted to help.

“The Belles have been collecting toys from family and friends for the past two weeks and the response has been amazing.”

The women said they have been overwhelmed with support they have received for the hospital’s toy appeal.

Nurses gave them a warm welcome when they arrived at the children’s ward with boxes of gifts.

The club has welcomed 72 members since it was formed nine months ago and aims to be accessible for everybody, even women who hate Lycra and hills.

Child minder Natalie has been cycling all her life and said the group has members of all ages, from 18 to women in their 60s.

“We all like to take on a challenge, especially together,” added Natalie.

“A lot of the ladies have managed to progress and are able to hold their own alongside the men.

“You get a great sense of achievement from cycling. With us, no one gets left behind and you don’t have to look good in Lycra to join in.”
