A BIG-HEARTED little boy turned Santa when he discovered that sick children had to spend Christmas in hospital.

Danny-Lee Jones, nine, from Runcorn, saved his pocket money and delivered a box of presents to the children’s ward at Warrington Hospital.

His mum Janine, 32, from Windmill Hill, said: “He was really concerned about children being in hospital at Christmas.

“He said: ‘I want to buy all those poorly kids a present.’

“He bought a baby rattle and toys for boys and girls and even got wrapping paper and sellotape so nurses could wrap them up.

“He reduced the nursing staff to tears.

“We couldn’t be more proud of him. He is a very loving and caring little boy.

“So many children have big lists for Christmas but Danny only ever thinks of others. I eventually got a little list off him.”

Staff in the neo-natal unit saved Danny’s life when he was born three months prematurely weighing only 2lbs 9ozs.

“He was on oxygen and still has problems with his bowels and lungs,” said Janine.

“He had an operation on his bowel when he was two and is now treated with medication. He is under a respiratory specialist and has medication and an inhaler to help his lungs.

“But he just soldiers on.”

The avid Everton fan has defied doctors’ fears that his premature birth might cause developmental difficulties.

His mum and dad Brett, 36, have been amazed by his energy and determination.

“They told us he could be late speaking and walking and might not be able to participate in activities,” added Janine.

“He has swimming lessons and swims like a fish. He loves football and plays as a winger with Kilgharrah Dragons.

“He is very bubbly and talkative and loves being in company.

“He has met all the players at Everton. Everyone says how well-mannered and generous he is.”

His family has nothing but praise for nurses in the neo-natal unit.

“We want to thank everyone at Warrington Hospital for saving Danny’s life, said Janine.

“They were absolutely fantastic.”

Warrington Hospital matron Jane Scott said: “We are overwhelmed by Danny-Lee’s generosity. What a lovely thought, we thank him from the bottom of our hearts.

“This little boy is what Christmas is all about putting others first.

“The children that come in over the Christmas period to our ward will be thoroughly spoilt by his gifts.”
