FIREFIGHTERS rescued a porpoise after it became stuck on the mud flats in Halebank in Widnes this afternoon, Wednesday.

The crew were called to the River Mersey near Pickering Pasture at around 3.40pm to help RSPCA officers rescue the animal.

Firefighters put on their water tight suits, waded into the water and used a board to keep the porpoise afloat while a marine vet was called to examine the animal before it was freed.
