TWO ambitious mums who went back to college after having children are kickstarting a new career.

Tracy Allcock, 39, and Jenny Murphy, 33, have opened their own hair salon at the home of Widnes Vikings.

And their ambitious goal is to become specialists for Afro styles.

Launching Crystal Couture at the Select Security Stadium is a dream come true for the pair.

“You only live once so you might as well go for it,” said mum-of-six Tracy, whose 21-year-old son Kaine’s band is supporting Canadian popstar Justin Bieber.

“Nothing ventured, nothing gained.”

Both women amassed experience from various jobs before enrolling as mature students at Riverside College.

“I was training to be a nurse,” said Tracy, from Halewood. “But fitting university round the children was really difficult and my husband had to go away to work.

“I’ve always been naturally good at hair, having four daughters, but I never thought of it as a career.

“I didn’t expect to love it as much as I do. I quickly got into it and have never looked back.”

Jenny, from Speke, who has one son, has worked in shops, a nursing home and holiday park.

“I wanted to show my son that you have to work hard in life to get what you want,” she said.

“I’ve always loved hairdressing and thought I’d see if I could do it.

“I worked really hard and got on well with the younger students.

“Opening our own business is exciting but scary at the same time.

“I would say to anyone, think about what you really want to do and enjoy it.”

Tracy’s 17-year-old daughter Leah is already following in her mum’s footsteps studying beauty therapy at Riverside.

Her other children Dwayne, 24, Ashleigh, 20, Chaneille, 11 and Freya, nine, are really supportive.

Tracy added: “I hope Leah will come into the business.

“I really want to push Afro styles. I love doing extensions, weaves and make up.

“I love meeting new people every day.”

The mums enjoy preparing brides for their big day and will be on hand to offer advice at a free Wedding and Partnership Fayre at the Select Security Stadium from noon to 4pm on Sunday, October 23.
