A WIDNES school where children enjoy a wide range of sports is up for a prestigious award.

Cronton CE Primary School has been shortlisted for outstanding commitment to sport in a primary school in The Educate Awards 2016.

Hundreds of schools across the north west submitted a record number of nominations.

Winners will be announced at a gala evening at Liverpool Cathedral on November 18.

The event recognises excellence in schools across Cheshire, Lancashire and the Liverpool City Region.

The biggest celebration of education, the awards in partnership with Copyrite Systems and Ricoh, are now in their fifth year.

The passion and innovation showcases in all 21 categories made choosing this year’s shortlist the most difficult yet.

Kim O’Brien, founder of the Educate Awards, said: “With more entries than ever before our judges found it so challenging to put together the final shortlists for each category.

“The dedication, hard work and impact that Cheshire teachers, support staff and school communities have is truly humbling.

“It was fantastic to see so many schools put their projects forward.

“The entries this year have been so amazing so thank you to each and every school that entered and best of luck to all those shortlisted.”

Cronton CE Primary School head teacher Sylvia Thomson said: “We are a small school with a bit commitment to PE.

“We’ve got high quality provision. Participation in school competitions includes football, basketball, swimming, tag rugby, try golf and high fives.

“We also have a range of extra curricular opportunities for children including girls football, judo and fencing.

“We recognise the value sport and PE make to a child’s wellbeing, physically and mentally.

“Children aspire the best they can be both individually and as part of a team.”

The school has won the Sainsbury’s gold games award for the past two years.
