FIREFIGHTERS are warning that arson attacks put lives at risk following a deliberate fire in Runcorn.

A mattress had been placed up against the fence of a property on Boston Avenue and set alight.

Crews say the fire caused considerable damage to the occupier’s fence and shed at around 10.15pm on Saturday, September 17.

Cheshire Police are currently investigating the incident.

Colin Heyes, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service arson reduction manager said: "This sort of crime is extremely dangerous and any fire puts the lives of the public and firefighters at considerable risk.

“It also takes up a lot of valuable time and resources.

“What people often don't think about is what is near the fire they are starting and the unpredictable nature of fire means it can often spread quickly and have devastating consequences.

"We really would like people to be on their guard and report anyone they see lighting fires.”

Firefighters suggest people follow the following advice to prevent your property from arson.

• The best defence against arson is effective security.

• Entry gates should be secured, unless in use, to prevent access by intruders.

• Ensure any damage to fencing is repaired promptly to deter intruders.

• Fit good quality external doors.

• Close windows when not at home.

• Consider security systems such as intruder alarms/security lighting to deter intruders.

• Sheds and garages should be well secured as they often contain tools that can be used to force entry in to the home. They also often contain flammable liquids. Don’t leave flammable liquids in the open.

• Look after your wheelie bin. If possible place out on the morning of collection and return to your property as soon as possible after collection.

• Avoid placing bins, rubbish, or other combustible items against the walls of the home. These are a ready supply of fuel for the arsonist.

• Burning materials (including fireworks) can be pushed through letterboxes. A metal container or lockable flap can be fitted.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service works closely with Cheshire Police and other agencies to stop this type of anti-social behaviour to preserve the safety of people and property.

Anyone with information about this sort of behaviour is urged to report to report it by calling Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111 or Cheshire Police on 101.
