FIREFIGHTERS from Runcorn joined forces with the Sure Start to Later Life group to make a splash on their third annual Boats and Hoses event.

The members of the older generation from Runcorn and Widnes hit the open waters as part of the Canal Boat Project.

Cllr Stef Nelson, Cheshire Fire Authority's deputy chairman, said: “Boats and Hoses is a fantastic project created by Runcorn firefighters.

“This is the third year that we have been doing this trip, which involves a leisurely cruise and a hearty lunch before sailing them back to the marina and their homes.”

Stuart and Brenda Lund, a couple from Warwickshire who have been married for 62 years, took part in the trip from the Runcorn Marina to Stockton Heath.

Watch manager Ben Sanderson said: “For Boats and Hoses we got in touch with older residents in our community who, for a variety of reasons, do not get the opportunity to see many people on a day-to-day basis.

“We then made it possible for them to mix with people from their area in a more unusual way, along with firefighters able to share some life-saving advice with them.

“We immersed ourselves into their lives for a day and they could not have been more grateful.

“This is a truly fantastic project and is job satisfaction at its best.”
