WATERLOO Road in Widnes is closed after a heavy goods vehicle struck a railway bridge.

The road was left strewn with debris after the top of the wagon was damaged.

The incident was reported to the police at 5.10am this morning.

Waterloo Road is closed from Ashley Way to the railway bridge.

Police have blocked the road and motorists face delays.

Roads throughout the town centre are heavily congested as traffic is diverted.

A Cheshire Police spokesman has confirmed that all the debris has been cleared away and the road re-opened at 9.10am.
