TWO people stranded on a capsized boat in Runcorn have been rescued from the River Mersey.

The boat overturned near the Old Quay swing bridge at Wigg Island shortly before 3.30pm this afternoon.

A third person managed to safely swim ashore before the tide changed and was checked by paramedics.

The other two people stuck on the overturned boat were wearing life jackets as firefighters mounted a rescue.

The boat suffered engine problems.

Firefighters from Runcorn, Widnes and Chester, the technical rescue unit from Knutsford and a boat and hydraulic platform are at the scene.

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Crews threw rescue lines to the people trapped to ensure their safety.”

The Mersey Gateway rescue boat managed to take the two people safely to shore where they were checked over by paramedics.
