A UNIQUE project which gives people with dementia a chance to share their treasured rugby league memories has been hailed a resounding success.

The Chemics Café offers them the chance to socialist, have fun and reminisce about special Widnes Vikings moments.

The next session takes place from 11am to 1.30pm on Wednesday, August 3.

It will include a host of fun activities including chair-based exercises with a Vikings coach and rugby reminiscence sessions with club legends Eddie Cunningham and Mike O’Neil.

Guests will also have the opportunity to go on an exclusive tour of the Select Security Stadium.

There will also be a special talk on nutrition and hydration for good health.

A representative of Widnes Vikings will share how nutrition is vital for ensuring optimum performance on the pitch.

Community Integrated Care’s (CIC) transformation and quality manager Peter Dillon will share top tips for how a good diet can support living well with dementia.

CIC head of marketing and communications John Hughes said: “The Chemics Café has proven to be a great success.

“It is a fantastic event that brings a smile to everyone’s faces.

“The aim is to make a difference to the lives of people living with dementia, and their loved ones, by coming together in a fun environment to share experiences, make new friends, get expert advice and connect with their precious memories of Widnes Vikings.”

Widnes Vikings legend Eddie Cunningham said: “I always have a fantastic time at the Chemics Café and so do our guests.

“Every session offers something special - from backstage tours of the stadium, through to unusual and fun activities, and the opportunity to spend time with legends and current players.

“This is another fantastic programme in the partnership between the Vikings and Community Integrated Care.

“It’s wonderful to see how we’re using rugby league, and memories of the game, to make a difference to the lives of people who live with dementia.”
