A RUNCORN woman was over the moon to reach her milestone 100th birthday.

Surprisingly, Irene Hankinson said it was the first party she had ever had!

Born in July 1916, she said she felt like royalty and even wore a tiara for the day.

Relatives, friends, residents and staff at HC One’s Beechcroft Care Home on Lapwing Grove, Palacefields surprised her with live entertainment and a feast of food.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Halton Cllr Ged Philbin and Ros Wong presented her with a basket of flowers.

Her Majesty the Queen sent her a special birthday card.

Irene was born in Liverpool during the First World War.

She married Arthur but never had any children and moved to Runcorn to be closer to her family after her husband died.

Irene, who is a great aunt, never worked and enjoys spending time with her nieces and nephews.

Palacefields ukulele band staged a special performance and invited the centenarian to have a go at playing their little instrument.

Residents sang and danced at Beechcroft which has been home to Irene since December.

Linda Clements, Beechcroft Care Home manager, said: “Hosting Irene’s 100th birthday celebrations was an absolute privilege.

“Irene was delighted by all the fuss on her special day particularly as it was the first birthday party she had ever had!

“Everyone who attended had a wonderful time and it’s delightful to see everyone enjoying themselves.”

HC One managing director Glen Mason added: “The 100th birthday party sounds as if it was a great event.

“Organising memorable events like this is an important part of how we provide the kindest care.”
