THE inaugural veterans charity shield kicks off in Runcorn.

Everton in the community and AFC Liverpool have joined forces to launch an 11-a-side football competition supporting ex-military personnel from across the north west.

It takes place at noon on Sunday, July 31 at the Millbank Linnets Stadium.

A variety of family activities will include bubble football, human archery, shooting ranges, a bouncy castle and a BBQ.

Widnes-based band The Odds will provide live music.

The match kicks off at 3pm as players from Knowsley Veterans’ Hub, a programme delivered by Everton Football Club’s official charity to engage ex-service personnel with sport, training and social activities and the penultimate pre-season friendly for North West Counties Football League club AFC Liverpool.

Dave Curtis, EitC Knowsley veterans’ hub manager, said: “The camaraderie within the team is second to none. These sessions are about more than just football.

“They bring together like-minded people and work to reduce social isolation and improve physical fitness.”

Tickets priced £3 will be available on the gate with free admission for children under 11.

Profits will be shared between three charities supporting veterans, Everton in the Community, Armed Forces Hub in Warrington and S.A.M.S in St Helens.
