FORMER rugby league star John Stankevitch has vowed to keep his mum’s memory alive as a date has been announced for her inquest.

The 36-year-old has launched the Cathie Stankevitch Foundation to make a difference to the lives of children and young people.

Cathie, 54, was killed in a tragic road accident when she was knocked over by an out of control van on Hough Green Road, Widnes, on September 27 last year.

Her husband, Kevin, 55, was also injured in the collision.

They were walking their new puppies along a footpath when a Citreon Berlingo van mounted the pavement behind them.

Cheshire Police has decided that no charges will be brought against the driver and an inquest will be held on September 20.

Dad-of-three John, 36, said: “Personally I’m not going because I don’t really want to face up to what’s happened.

“My dad, uncle and nan will be there. It will bring closure but I’d rather concentrate on the charity.

“We aim to target help to families of children and young people who might be disadvantaged through lack of money, disability or other barriers.”

The ex-Viking hopes to launch a rugby league for children and young people with learning disabilities.

Over the summer he is encouraging people to donate unwanted sports clothing and equipment so families can share recycled items at a swap shop.

“I was looking through my son Oliver’s drawer and found five football kits we paid £70 each for,” he said.

“They are now too small and he only wore then a handful of times.

Items can be dropped off at Upton and Ditton community centres for a distribution event in the autumn.

Fundraising scratchcards will be launched in pubs across Widnes in October.

A motown and soul night is being held at St Basil’s Club, Hough Green on September 3. Admission is £3 on the door.

“Mum was the most generous person you’d ever meet,” said John.

“She was passionate about children’s charities. We just want to keep her memory alive.”
