THE dynamic man behind the transformation of Runcorn Shopping Centre has won a top national accolade.

Centre manager Karl Clawley was named runner-up in manager of the year at the Dorchester Hotel last night in the retail industry’s Oscars, the Sceptre awards.

The 51-year-old was up against stiff competition across the UK including Birmingham’s Bull Ring.

“I’m absolutely made up,” said Karl.

“For Runcorn to be recognised like this is a massive achievement.

“This is about the team not just me.”

Karl vowed to bring the 45-year-old centre into the 21st century when he took over in 2013 after it had recently come out of administration.

A £10 million investment rebranded and refurbished the dated development to create new jobs and attract more retailers.

“Three years ago we had 40 per cent vacancies, this time next year we should be 100 per cent full,” said Karl, who started his career as a stockroom boy at 17 for Topman.

“We now have a great website and a very active Facebook with over 3,500 followers.”

The biggest challenge he faced was the closure of Tesco in April 2015 with the loss of 110 jobs.

“When Tesco pulled out it affected the whole centre,” he said.

“We worked hard and managed to attract The Range which should open late September.”

The vacant unit is being turned into a two-storey department store as 100 staff are being recruited.

“We also have interest from a big major retailer who wants to take a 25,000 sq ft space. It will be a great addition to what Runcorn needs.”

The centre now employs more than 1,000 staff in 50 stores.

A one stop shop offers free training courses to help shop owners recruit new staff.

Embracing the community has been at the heart of Karl’s vision.

A summer extravaganza attracted 150,000 visitors last year.

Coffee in a box gives older people the chance to meet new people, have a laugh and seek help and support every Wednesday.

“Everything we do engages people,” said Karl. “We want to capture the heart of the community and give people a sense of pride.”
