A TOP British rock climber clinched a world title just hours after being awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Shauna Coxsey from Runcorn won a silver medal in the sixth round of the bouldering world cup in Vail, Colorado.

Her dominance on the world circuit as a member of the British competition climbing team has seen her achieve four golds this year.

This means she has now secured the overall championship which finishes in Munich in August.

The 23-year-old tweeted: “What a way to end an incredible day. Sat on the balcony watching this epic sunset, MBE and world title.”

Shauna, who grew up in Dukesfield, id Britain’s most successful competition climber ever.

The former St Michael’s and Grange pupil hangs by her fingernails as she scrambles up daunting obstacles climbing without ropes.

Bouldering requires tenacity, strength and determination.

Faced with a series of problems, competitors have to perform physically demanding gymnastic sequences to work out each intricate route.

Shauna’s passion for climbing was inspired by a French mountaineer.

Her proud dad, Mike, aged 59, an IT technician at Halton Council, said: “She was three-years-old and sat on my knee watching Catherine Destiville, the daredevil climber on TV.

“She looked up at me and said: “Can I do that?”

She started climbing at four, competing at seven and now trains 40 hours a week.

Her mum, Mavis and six older sisters and one brother give her every encouragement as her spiderwoman skills astound spectators all over the world.

She is coming home to celebrate with her family this weekend.

“This year she has competed in Switzerland, Japan, China, India, Austria and America,” added Mike.

“She has had an exceptionally good year.

“She has loved it from the first moment.”

Shauna has been honoured for her services to climbing as she gives up her time to talk to schoolchildren and support charities.

She is the founder and organiser of the Women’s Climbing Symposium, a trustee for Climber’s Against Cancer and an ambassador for the British Climbing Council.
