RUNCORN MP Graham Evans has joined people all over the world to pay tribute to MP Jo Cox who died yesterday after being shot and stabbed.

The 41-year-old mum-of-two was attacked before holding a constituency surgery in Birstall, West Yorkshire.

Weaver Vale conservative MP Mr Evans said: “I, like everyone else, was shocked and sickened by the news of the violent murder of my colleague Jo Cox.

“She was a courageous woman both in and out of parliament spearheading many causes.

“In the year that she has been an MP Jo clearly worked tirelessly for those in need, spoke up loudly for those who needed a voice, and served the community who elected her with vigour and passion.”

Only last week he joined her for a charity event.

“Just last week we were both taking part in the annual Macmillan tug of war fundraiser,” said Mr Evans.

“She may only have been 5ft tall but she pulled more than her weight in every way.

“I got to know Jo well and will always remember her as a great parliamentarian, wife and mum.

“She will be greatly missed by all in Parliament, not simply for all she has already achieved but for all that she would have achieved in the years to come.”

Halton’s Labour MP Derek Twigg said: “I am deeply shocked.

“Jo was a capable, motivated and committed MP.

“She was only elected in 2015 yet she had already begun to make a mark, particularly around the Syrian issue.

“She was very friendly and enthusiastic and had a lot of experience.”

Mr Twigg said being accessible to the public was one of Britain’s democratic values.

“Being born and bred in Widnes, people know you and stop you when you’re walking down the street or going shopping,” he added.

“People have to be able to speak to their MPs.”
