HALE Carnival has been hailed ‘the best ever’ despite a heavy downpour.

The rhythmic music of a Samba band brought the Rio Olympics theme to life.

Vale Royal Falconry handlers mounted fascinating displays with various birds of prey.

Live music from The Hips, morris dancing and a classic car show provided entertainment for all ages.

New rose queen Imogen Atkinson was crowned and ferried round Hale Park in a horse drawn carriage.

Cerri Gallagher, chairman of Hale Carnival committee, said: “The rain didn’t deter the revellers. We had around 3,000 people.

“The stalls were the best ever. We had fairground rides and a fantastic performance from Saint Peter and Paul Catholic College Samba Band.

“The choir from Hale School gave their best ever performance.

“It was a fun packed day, everything from historic photographs to owls, all went well.”

Stalls sold a selection of items from cheese and chocolate to creative crafts and home made cakes.

Crafters and businesses taking part praised the organisers for all their hard work behind the scenes.

Amanda Kennedy said: “Fantastic day, fantastic sales. Kennedy Creations will be there next year. Thanks to all the customers that bought from us despite the rain we had a great day.”

Dorothy Hadley said: “Well done to you all you all deserve a medal.

“The rain didn't dampen our spirits and we met old customers who greeted us like friends. A fantastic day, and a big thank you.”

A tug of war saw Hale beat Halebank in a lively contest.

The first shore dash was so popular, it is set to become a regular feature. Guy Roberts won the male race and Arianna Ojeda came first in the womens’ event.

More than 40 scarecrows inspired by the Rio Olympics decorated the entire village.

There is still time to enter the front garden competition which is being judged on July 14.

Plans are already underway for 2017.

“We have managed to secure next year’s carnival and keep tradition alive,” added Cerri.
