A RED London bus brought fun and excitement to a Widnes school.

Every pupil at Brookfields Special School was taken for a ride to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.

It was part of an action-packed programme of royal festivities as the school was decked in red, white and blue balloons.

“The kids were absolutely buzzing,” said teaching assistant Sarah Woods who organised the day’s special events.

“We can show children photographs but to actually get them sitting on a bus to experience the sights, sounds and smells just brings it alive.

“It was wonderful for them.

“Their descriptive language afterwards was just magical.”

Youngsters at the Moorfield Road School then took part in interactive stories.

They were inspired to design their own hats for Her Majesty as they listened to a story called The Queen’s Birthday Hat.

After trying on lots of different styles, they were amazed to discover she chose a tatty old straw hat for her special celebration.

A traditional lunch of fish, chips and mushy peas and a royal cup cake was followed by an afternoon concert.

Young musicians from Wade Deacon playing various brass instruments staged a prom style performance.

Rain failed to dampen spirits as a traditional street party which was to have been held in the tyre park sensory garden was moved into the school hall.

Pupils tucked into cucumber and jam sandwiches, scones, fairy cakes, jellies and ice cream.

“Wade Deacon pupils finished off the afternoon playing God Save The Queen,” added Sarah.

“At the end a five-year-old pupil Caleb Ryder turned to me and said ‘This is the best day ever’.

“Moments like that make everything worthwhile.

“To see the smiles on the children’s faces as they were going home was priceless.”

The school would like to thank parents and businesses in the community for helping to make the day so special.
