Murder squad detectives renew appeal following stabbing of Widnes dad

One week after 43-year-old Lee Briggs was stabbed, police are continuing to appeal for information.

It follows an incident in St Marie's Community Park on Ann Street West on Monday, May 16.

Detective Inspector Steve Jones said: "We have already spoken to a lot of people as part of the ongoing investigation.

“I am aware that the park is well used by dog walkers and as a cut through and I’m keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the park – or the immediate area – at the time of Lee’s death and who has not yet spoken to an officer to come forward.

“Even the smallest piece of information can be useful when piecing together a case.

"Officers are returning to the park today – one week on from Lee’s death – to speak to people in the hope of getting further information to assist with the case.

“This is believed to be an isolated and targeted incident and enquiries are ongoing in a bid to trace whoever is responsible."

Police were called to St Marie’s Park, which is near Tesco Extra off Lugsdale Road on Monday, May 16 following the discovery of a man with serious injuries.

The victim was taken to Whiston Hospital by ambulance where he sadly died a short time later.

A post mortem concluded the cause of death was due to a single stab wound.

A murder investigation was launched and officers from Cheshire Police’s Major Crime Directorate have been carrying out extensive enquiries in the local area including house-to-house enquiries, forensic enquiries and CCTV enquiries.

Local officers are continuing to provide reassurance to the community.

They will remain in the area over the coming days and anyone with any issues or concerns is urged to speak to an officer.

Detectives are keen to talk to anyone with information which could assist their enquiries.
