A MAJOR fire which destroyed an empty Widnes pub was started deliberately, police confirmed today.
Officers from Widnes local Policing Unit are now appealing for information following the blaze at the Albert Hotel on Albert Road.
Around 20 residents were evacuated as firefighters fought the fierce blaze.
It was initially reported to officers at approximately 5.30am on Wednesday.
The incident is being treated as suspicious and officers are appealing for anyone who believes they have any information in relation to the fire to come forward.
Detective Inspector Ian Whiley said: “This was a serious incident which caused widespread disruption for local residents and businesses.
“As a result of the fire a number of roads were closed for several hours, and more than 20 residents were evacuated from their homes.”
