CON men selling fish from a van have targeted a 94-year-old Runcorn woman three times in the past three months in her own home.

Cheshire Police are now warning people to be on their guard after the gang stole £250 from the elderly victim.

The first fraudster knocked on the woman’s door in February offering to sell a large box of fish for £20.

The resident paid using her debit card and later discovered that the man had taken a payment of £270 from her account.

The woman was targeted again on two separate occasions but refused to buy anything.

Halton Council’s trading standards officers today urged the public to be vigilant after a spate of similar incidents have been reported across Halton, Warrington and Cheshire.

Officers are advising anyone who has bought fish from a door-to-door salesman to check their bank statement.

Anyone who fears they may be a victim of a scam can call Halton Council’s specialist trading standards officers on 0151 511 8785.

They are already working with people in Halton who have lost thousands of pounds to scams.
