BOGUS callers tried to trick their way into the home of an elderly woman in Runcorn.

Halton Council says workmen wearing ID badges knocked on the door of the old lady who lives alone.

A council spokesman said: “They asked to check her electric cupboard and smoke alarms.

“The lady’s landlord has confirmed that no visitors or inspections had been arranged.

“Avoid being caught out by other doorstep rogues by refusing to deal with people who cold-call you.”

The men were both in their 40s and drove a white van.

Anyone who suspects they may have been caught out by a scam is urged to call Halton Council's Trading Standards officers on 0151 511 8785 or 0151 511 8775.

They are already working with people in Halton who have lost thousands of pounds to scams.
