A RUNCORN school has been praised for its 'outstanding' care of diabetic pupils.

Weston Primary is one of the first schools in the country to win a Diabetes UK good diabetes care in school award which recognises its support for children with type 1 diabetes.

The school in Lambsickle Lane was chosen by an assessment panel of parents and representatives from Diabetes UK.

Head teacher Ros Atkins said: “We are delighted. We take our responsibility to provide children with diabetes the support and care they need to manage their condition safely in school very seriously.

“We have worked extremely closely with students, parents, and school staff to ensure that the right care is in place.

“Children with type 1 diabetes should have the same opportunities as their peers and be able to fully participate in their education to reach their full academic potential.”

The school received the award at a special assembly.

The charity says it is crucial that children with diabetes keep their blood glucose to target levels.

Stephen Ryan, regional manager for the north of England at Diabetes UK said: “Weston Primary School is providing outstanding care and support to children with diabetes.

“We urge all schools to follow their example as good care in schools means that children and young people with diabetes stay healthy and get the best from their education.”
