WARRINGTON and Halton Green Party believes 'time is running out' for the world to save the planet amid growing fears over carbon emissions.

World leaders will meet in Paris on Monday, November 30, at the United Nations Climate Change Conference to discuss the steps that need to be taken to ensure future generations can enjoy healthy living conditions across the globe.

The conference, which has been described as the 'last chance saloon' by some environmentalists, will hear the major polluting nations set out their pledges to help reduce the damage currently being caused.

Warrington and Halton Green Party committee member Alan McKinnon believes significant progress has been made but is urging the Government to take action so the country can remain on par with other nations.

He said: "Time is running out due to the already 'locked in' effect of past emissions.

"The key challenge is to drastically reduce the global burning of fossil fuels and to rapidly transfer to renewable energy sources.

"Recent take-up of solar and wind generation has been impressive.

"Unfortunately, despite some early successes, the UK is being left behind as the current Government withdraws solar and offshore wind subsidies, promotes fracking and locks in high future energy prices with its commitment to hugely expensive nuclear plants.

"Closer to home in Warrington, we have a special interest in the transition to renewables, given that we have one of the most polluting coal-fired power stations on our doorstep.

"Although much smaller in scale, the Woolston Weir hydro-project will help make the case for more similar schemes, providing a valuable local supplement to wind and solar."

Greens party leader Steph Davies believes there are practical things 'we can all do' to reduce our carbon footprint.

She added: "We cannot bury our heads in the sand and pretend that climate change won't have some effect on us all.

"We would urge Warrington residents to put pressure on the Prime Minister to set some clear and effective goals in Paris."
