TWELVE students are celebrating after winning a college scholarship.

The outstanding scholars at Cronton Sixth Form College have received a bursary at Riverside College after a series of interviews.

They were awarded the scholarships because of their proven talent and flair in the college’s three centres of excellence subjects, science and maths, performing arts and sports.

College principal Mary Murphy said: “These scholarships support students and provide financial assistance towards the costs of fulfilling their full potential in their chosen field.

“For example, students may use the money for attending competitions, buying equipment, paying for specialist coaching or tuition and/or studying towards extension awards.”

Former SS Peter and Paul Catholic College pupil, Charlotte Graham, aged 17, from Ganton Close, Widnes, said: “I couldn’t believe I had been chosen.

“The scholarship will be a big help with purchasing equipment to progress further with my music studies.”

She will be studying music, psychology and sociology.

Vanya Barzilova, aged 16, from Handforth Lane, Halton Lodge, Runcorn, a former pupil at St Chad’s Catholic and Church of England High School, saidL “I was amazed that I made it into the top six science and maths scholars.

“I am very happy to have already made a great impression in college.”

Vanya will be taking A levels in biology, chemistry, maths and psychology.

Former Grange pupil, Emma Lansdell, aged 16, from The Clough, Runcorn, said: “I was ecstatic when I found out I had been chosen for a scholarship as it was something I really wanted to achieve.”

She will be studying biology, chemistry, maths and physics.

Other successful Halton students include former St Chad’s pupil, Jamie Blakey, aged 17, from Laburnum Grove, Runcorn, former SS Peter & Paul College pupil Luke Riley, aged 17, from Heyes Road, Widnes, and former Wade Deacon pupil Joseph Davies, aged 17, from Rushton Close, Widnes.
