BUILDING work has started again on a £6.3 million Halton Housing development for the over 55s in Widnes.

Barkla Fields was nearing completion on the site of the former Pingot Day Centre for adults with learning difficulties when contractors went into administration in May.

Southdale Limited collapsed with the loss of 87 jobs.

Kier Living has been chosen as the new contractor to complete the project on Dundalk Road.

It will include 50 apartments, five supported bungalows, a bistro and activity room.

Kier Living is the new homes division of multi-national construction company Kier Group.

Paul Mullane, director of development at the trust, said: “We are thrilled to have Kier on board to complete the project.

“They have an excellent track record of delivering high quality homes.

“I’m confident that customers and people living near to the development will re-assured by this fantastic news.”

The luxury extra care scheme is expected to be completed by March, 2016.

Two bedroom accommodation will be available for rent, sale and shared ownership.

Barkla Fields was named after Widnes born Nobel prize w2inning physicist Charles Glover Barkls for his work in x-ray spectroscopy.
