BLUE plaques have been unveiled to celebrate Halton's rugby heritage.

One has been placed at the Select Security Stadium to mark the 120th anniversary of Widnes's first home rugby league game.

The match took place on September 14, 1895 when the team played Leeds.

A plaque was recently unveiled in Runcorn to celebrate the first rugby league game in Halton.

On September 7, 1895 Runcorn played its first home game under the rules of rugby league.

Runcorn beat Widnes 15-4.

President of the Rugby Football League Paul Morgan, said a few words about the blue plaque before it was unveiled by Halton’s Mayor Cllr Ellen Cargill.

Halton Cllr Phil Harris, board member for sport, said: "With Halton's rich rugby league history it is fitting these plaques are commemorating the birth of the sport at Widnes, which is for many, the spiritual home of ruby league.”
