NEW carrier bag charges are being introduced on Monday, October 5.

In a survey of more than 9,000 people aged over 50, three quarters say they support the move.

But they believe the money should be donated to charity.

The single-use carrier bag charge legislation affects retailers with more 250 employees.

It is hoped the move will help protect the countryside and wildlife by removing the number of dumped carrier bags.

Last year 7.6 billion bags were given out.

Carrier bags can take up to 1,000 years to break down.

Saga research shows that over 50s overwhelmingly support the new charges.

Nine in 10 already take bags with them when they go shopping.

Saga’s director of communications Paul Green said: “Our research shows that over 50s clearly have the environmental bug and do reuse their shopping bags wherever possible.”
