A CAMPAIGN to crack down on rogue traders is being mounted by Cheshire Police.

Officers joined forces with Halton Council, Trading Standards and three local authorities for a day of action yesterday.

Residents are urged to watch out for doorstep callers offering offering unnecessary, overpriced substandard gardening or maintenance work.

Police say offenders often travel large distances to commit crime and evidence suggests that there are links between rogue traders and those who commit distraction burglaries.

Inspector Ian Stead said: “It is important that residents check the identity of cold callers and do not allow themselves to be pressurised into any sales they’re unsure about.

“Doorstep crime can have a devastating impact on victims both financially and emotionally.

“Cheshire Police do not tolerate this type of crime and we’re here for our communities when and where you need us.”

Halton Cllr Dave Cargill, board member for Trading Standards, said: “Halton Trading Standards has produced no cold calling cards and letterbox stickers that ask uninvited callers to leave without knocking.”

Tips to avoid doorstep crime include:

• Always check the identity of the doorstep caller by telephoning the company they are claiming to be from. Use the telephone listed in your local phonebook or off the company website. Do not use a number the caller gives you.

• Check whether traders are members of the local authority assured trader schemes or the government trust mark scheme.

• Discuss any work you feel needs carrying out on your property with a relative or a friend who can help you find a reputable trader.

• Don’t agree to anything on the spot, or sign anything. Do not feel pressured into having work carried out

• Never pay cash upfront and don’t ever go to the bank or cashpoint with a trader

Anyone with information about rogue traders is urged to call Cheshire Police on 101 or 999 if there is a crime in progress.
