GREAT Britain rugby league legend Frank Myler is to open a £2.7 million sports pavilion in Widnes named in his honour.

An open day is being to celebrate the launch of the Frank Myler Sports and Recreation Ground in Liverpool Road.

Family fun activities will take place from 11am to 2pm on Saturday, October 3.

There will be zorb football, an inflatable obstacle course, giant slide, face painting and taster sessions.

Former players Jim Mills and Doug Laughton will join Frank as he opens the centre at 12.30pm.

The ground on the former Widnes Recreation Club site now has 11 pitches for football and rugby, a cricket wicket and floodlit multi-use games area.

The pavilion has 15 changing rooms, a community room, kitchen, toilets and reception.

Halton Cllr Phil Harris, board member for sport, said: “This is an important community sports facility in Halton.

“The site has historically provided sports facilities and pitches for the area.

“It is well located on a major public transport route and forms part of a much larger sports park area.

“It should be a fun, relaxing day for anyone attending this formal opening.”

The centre has been named after Frank to recognise his many achievements as a player, coach and manager which spanned almost 50 years.

Frank, aged 76, was the last British captain to lift the Ashes trophy in Australia, as he led the Lions to a 2-1 test series victory in 1097.

He received the Freedom of the Borough from Halton Council in 2004.
