THE principal of Sandymoor School has left, it has been announced today.

Andy Howard has led the Runcorn freeschool since it opened in temporary accommodation in September, 2012.

The physics specialist quit his job at Bolton Independent Day School to take up the position.

He had spent half his teaching career in state schools and half in the independent sector.

No reasons have been given for his departure.

Chairman of governors Richard Eastburn told staff at the school today and parents are being notified by letter.

Mr Eastburn said: “Mr Howard has been off work since the end of June.

“The governors have agreed with Mr Howard that he will be leaving the school to pursue other opportunities.

“We wish him well.

“We will be considering the process for the recruitment of a principal during the first term.

“In the meantime, governors are grateful that Mrs Simpson has agreed to provide stability and leadership to our school.”

Vice principal Emma Simpson has taken on the role of acting principal and will be supported by associate principal Dr David Dennison.

Halton’s first freeschool was founded by five Sandymoor parents.

An innovative £12 million state-of-the-art building opened in Wharford Lane last September.

Four of the founder parent’s children are now pupils.

Andrew Lockyer’s daughter, Olivia, Brian Jones’ daughter, Alana and John Snow’s daughter, Jessica start today tomorrow.

Jo Wakefield’s daughter, Grace enrolled last year.

The school now has pupils in years seven to 11 and plans to launch a sixth form next September.

Twelve new members of staff started work today.

Dad-of-two Mr Eastburn added: “The majority of pupils walk or cycle to school.

“We look forward to grow in the future and continue to develop.”

Prime Minister David Cameron hailed the Sandymoor a ‘excellent example of freeschools’ when he brought his election battle bus to the school in April.
