THE sentencing of a man who has admitted the attempted murder of a 41-year-old woman was adjourned today, Monday.

Warren Flaherty, aged 49, of Greenway Road, Widnes, was due to be sentenced at Chester Crown Court today.

But the case was postponed as more information was requested in relation to an interim hospital order that is being sought by the defence.

An interim court order, which lasts for a minimum of 12 weeks, can be obtained if two doctors advise the court that the defendant may have a mental health problem and may need treatment in hospital.

Judge Roger Dutton said he needed further details about the security of the hospital where Flaherty would be staying should he grant the order.

The court heard how the hospital where Flaherty would reside had been categorised as ‘medium-secure’.

He said: "This is an extraordinarily grave case for which frankly it is a miracle she survived and the defendant is clearly aware of this.

He added: "I'm not going to make order that would allow him to walk out of there."

Flaherty, who was also charged with affray and being in possession of an offensive weapon, was arrested after police were called to reports of an assault in Lower Appleton Road, Widnes at 5.35pm on Saturday, November 8, 2014

At the time Cheshire Police said a 41-year-old woman had injuries consistent with being caused by a knife.

The case has been adjourned to Friday.
