FRIENDS of a popular and well-liked motor vehicle student at Riverside College have climbed the highest peak in Wales in memory of their mate.

Staff say Mike Davies always strived for success in his studies and devoted his time to his course and supporting his group peers.

He was also dedicated to helping others, working with many organisations and charities.

Sadly, Mike was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year and lost his fight in May.

His colleagues and students at Riverside thought very highly of Mike, and to pay tribute, they decided to climb up Mount Snowdon to remember their friend and raise funds for Halton Haven Hospice on his behalf.

On the day, the team left for Mount Snowdon with temperatures forecasted for 30°c.

The group arrived at Pen-y-pass and embarked on the Pyg track at 10.40am and eventually summited Mount Snowdon at 2pm before stopping to reflect on memories of their time with Mike.

So far, a total of £380 has been raised via donations through the Justgiving website, exceeding the original target of £200.

John Adams, programme area leader for motor vehicle, said: “There was a concerted effort of all participants to accomplish their goal of summiting Mount Snowdon.

"Despite the challenges of the climb and high temperatures, the group pushed themselves beyond their expectations to raise money in memory of Mike.

"I am very proud of them all and feel honoured to have been part of the event.”
