HIDDEN secrets could soon be unearthed at Halton Castle.

The 12th century medieval landmark in Halton Village is preparing for its first dig in almost 30 years.

Volunteers are invited to help between July 13 and 25.

Claire Broadhurst, activity planner for Norton Priory, who manage the castle, said: ‘We’re really excited about the community excavation.

“There hasn’t been a dig at Halton Castle since 1987.

!Who knows what residents could uncover at the castle that could go on exhibition at Norton Priory in the new museum next year?”

The dig will provide opportunities for anyone interested in archaeological excavation.

Professional archaeologists from Salford University will guide volunteers.

It is a rare and fantastic opportunity to explore the grounds of a medieval castle.

The investigation will attempt to discover the origins of the castle and answer some of the questions surrounding its later use.

An open day will be held from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, July 25 at Halton Castle to find out how what was uncovered.

This is a chance to see the excavations, talk to the archaeologists and find out more about any interesting discoveries.

The dig is being organised by Norton Priory Museum and Gardens, with funding support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Area Forum.

Salford University’s Centre for Applied Archaeology will supervise the dig.

Historic England has provided invaluable support.

Anyone wishing to volunteer on the dig can call Norton Priory on 01928 569895 or email info@nortonpriory.org
