A RUNCORN runner has achieved an incredible feat.

Mike Metcalfe, aged 25, completed a half marathon and full marathon in one day.

He is only the eighth person to finish both races at the Edinburgh Marathon Festival since the event was launched 12 years ago.

Just reaching the starting line of the 26.2 mile course was a test of endurance.

Mike had to hire a courier to ferry him between the two events.

Plumber Mike, of Thorn Road, said: “I crossed the half marathon in 1 hour 27 minutes.

“I kept running, grabbing my medal and t-shirt. I was so relieved to spot my motorbike taxi.

“My biker got me across Edinburgh city in 24 minutes. With all the road closures I would never have made it in a car.”

He then joined 10,000 runners and completed 26.2 miles.

Amazingly, the day before, he did a 10k and 5k race, running 48.6 miles altogether and ended up with four medals.

Former Grange Comprehensive pupil Mike said: “I’ve never done anything like this before. I felt really proud of myself.”

Mike, who lives with his mum, Bev and 21-year-old brother Jamie, only started running two years ago to lose weight.

He was surprised to discover he had a natural ability and has been hailed an elite runner.

He completed the Manchester Marathon in 2 hours 56 minutes, which gives him automatic entry to next year’s London Marathon.

He joined Warrington Running Club in January and attributes his success to his coach, Phil Jolley.

He added: “I’ve had amazing support from everyone at the club.

“I’ve made such good friends and met lovely people.”

He did the Mersey Tunnel 10k race on Sunday, June 7 and runs in the rock and roll marathon on Sunday, June 14.

He is raising money for the Roy Castle Lung Foundation.
