DISCOUNT store giant B&M Retail is creating 250 new jobs at a new warehouse in Runcorn.

The company has taken over the former Onyx 350 unit in Manor Park.

The Speke based firm is now hiring transport and warehouse staff for the new distribution centre which opens in July.

A further 250 employees will be recruited at a new operation in Middlewich in September.

The chain is one of the fastest growing retailers in the UK with 444 stores, including two in Widnes.

It sells housewares, toys, furniture, food and garden products.

Halton Council leader Cllr Rob Polhill said: “These jobs are very welcome.

“Halton has found its niche with the logistics market.

“Companies are choosing to come here because of our excellent road network and the prospect of a new bridge."

Mike Benson, distribution director said: “We are delighted to have agreed terms to acquire these premises which had both been vacant for some years.

“In doing so, we are creating much needed employment for Class 1 HGV drivers, warehouse operatives and supervisors.

“These high bay, modern facilities are either strategically located on the M6 motorway network or convenient for our primary distribution centre in Liverpool, and a much-needed improvement on our legacy warehousing.”

The company has reported sales of more than £1.6 million in the past year.

It floated on the London Stock Exchange last year.
